Concept
This project was born from a personal desire to merge my background in Scientific Illustration with my current surroundings. Living in Switzerland, I wanted to apply my technical skills to document and celebrate the local flora and fauna. By focusing on regional biodiversity, this project became a way to deeply connect with the environment around me while communicating its importance through visual art.
Objective
The goal was to create a comprehensive series of digital illustrations and infographics that showcase Switzerland’s natural richness. I experimented with various digital styles ranging from clean, minimal line work to detailed scientific realism to find the most effective way to help viewers understand and appreciate these species.
My Role
Scientific illustration goes far beyond simple drawing; it is a meticulous process of observation and synthesis. My role involved:
- Scientific Research: Investigating each species to create an accurate archetype that represents the species as a whole, rather than just one specific individual.
- Full-Cycle Creation: Handling everything from initial research and sketching to the final digital rendering and infographic layout.
- Strategy: Deciding which visual style best serves the communication of specific biological facts.
Process
Beyond the final pieces, I documented the journey to share the "behind-the-scenes" of scientific art. I created dedicated content for social media to show the research and layering involved in each illustration. You can follow these creative processes and see the work in progress on my dedicated art account: @laura_creates_art.
Deliverables
The final output of this project consists of a curated collection of digital illustrations capturing the essence of Swiss wildlife and a series of scientific infographics designed to educate the public on the country's diverse ecosystems.
